A MTV revelou os indicados ao Video Music Awards de 2020, com Ariana Grande , Lady Gaga , Billie Eilish e The Weeknd, liderando o numero de indicados. Todos os quatro foram indicados ao vídeo do ano, a categoria mais cobiçada do programa: Gaga e Grande por seu videoclipe “Rain on Me”, Eilish por “Everything I Wanted” e The Weeknd por “Blinding Lights”. Taylor Swift, recebeu cinco indicações.
Lady Gaga e Ariana Grande receberam nove indicações cada, enquanto Eilish e The Weeknd têm seis. Notavelmente, Gaga e The Weeknd foram nomeados para artistas do ano, e Eilish, Grande e Gaga estão na música do ano com "Everything I Wanted" e "Rain on Me", respectivamente.
A MTV anunciou as indicações deste ano por meio da nota de voz do Twitter, tornando-as a primeira grande premiação a usar o recurso. Também foram introduzidas duas novas categorias temáticas de quarentena: Melhor Videoclipe de Casa e Melhor Desempenho de Quarentena.
(G)I-DLE, BTS, EXO, Monsta X, Tomorrow X Together e Red Velvet, disputam em Melhor K-Pop, categoria que também entrou recentemente na premiação.
Agora, os fãs podem votar nos vencedores em 15 categorias no site da MTV até 23 de agosto, enquanto a votação do Melhor Novo Artista de PUSH, apresentado pelo Chime Banking, pode continuar até a cerimônia de premiação em 30 de agosto.
